Otto Braun was the son of the German feminist and socialist Lily Braun. He died on the Somme in 1918. The frontispiece shows the author at the age of 18 -

He served in the Prussian army throughout the war until he was killed. He had come from a very left wing backfround and he was thought to be headed for great things.
He was something of a child prodigy who promised to be a great writer but he was killed at the age of 20 before he had published a word. `
