Both books have brown covers with gilt lettering with some shelf wear. The front and back inner hinges of the first volume have cracked, although the binding is still tight. Both books have foxing, but this is mainly confined to the end pages. The majority of the poems are clean.


VOL. 1 - 'ONE HUNDRED OF THE BEST POEMS ON THE EUROPEAN WAR' by 'POETS OF THE EMPIRE' edited by Charles F. Forshaw. Published by Elliot Stock, London. 1915. First Edition. Ink inscription on front endpaper reads:

'To Charles Edward Stratton, On His Birth Day, Nov. 30th 1915, From The Editor of this Anthology, Chas. F. Forshaw. Hoping he will live to see and appreciate his Sister's poem which will appear in Vol II of this work - a copy of which I shall send to him, C. F. F.' (and indeed in the second volume there is a poem entitled 'The Navy' by one, 'Ella M. Stratton'

The actual text of the Preface to the first volume reads, 'Herein will be found One Hundred Poems on the European War by a like number of Authors. The majority of them are well-known in the world of literature, and are writers of repute, most of them have published volumes of verse. Several of the poems have been specially contributed...'
