Notes
Endre Ady (November 22, 1877 - January 27, 1919) was a Hungarian poet. On leaving school he studied law for a time, but in 1899 he published an insignificant volume of verse, Versek, and from 1900 until his death he worked as a journalist. In 1903 he published another volume of poetry, Még egyszer, in which signs of his exceptional talent could be seen. With his next book, Uj versek (1906; “New Poems”), he burst into Hungarian literary life. His understanding of his country, of its social and political ills, and of the sufferings that had been inflicted by World War I inspired him to find new means of expressing pain and anger. By that time his failing health, undermined by a profligate life, proved unable to stand up to the pressure of constant hard work. He had published 10 volumes of poetry in 12 years, as well as short stories and countless articles. He died a victim of alcoholism.
