Author's note
"These few poems are, in a small way, the fulfilment of a promise I made to some Greek friends on a summer eveening of last year in Athens. I hope that Mariana, Yanni and Kyriakos, in particular, will like some of them, at leas a little. If the poem merit a dedication at all, I should like to dedicate them, not only to my Athenian friends, but also to that wonderful courage, gaiety and kindliness, which the Greek people have preserved through all their struggle and suffering.
