"This book, My Lost Japan, a WWII reflective diary of eighteen months of incarceration in prison and internment camps in Japan, was written during three months on the prisoner echange boats... The manuscript, after passing through Censorship at New York was returned to me. I placed it in a black lacquer box and sealed it away.

Fifty years later an associate artist from Japan, Yasumasa Tanano, was rearranging the shelves in my atelier. In moving the sealed black lacquer box, he asked of it's contents, suggested it be open and checkfor any age damage.

I agreed. The seal was broken. The lid, removed and there! The manuscript. I caught my breath!

My vision blurred. And as I hurriedly departed from the room, I turned to Yasu...."
