"I selected the world war for the subject of my collection not merely because it interested me, but because I felt it would interest the readers. This subject is being dramatized and novelized with great success. Some of the most popular plays on Broadway this season and last, have been plays that dealt with the war. The fame of "Journey's End" is world-wide. In the field of novels, "Alll Quiet on the Western Front" stands first but, by far, not alone. Its success has been equally great on the screen. So solemn a subject as this war has even been used in the most hilarious comedies. Surely this is proof enough of the general public's interst in the world war. I consider some of the work in poetry as illustrious as that in these other fields, and hope that the reader will find as much pleasure in it"
