"Rev. Abram J. Ryan, the poet-priest of the south, was, erhaps,, the most unique and remarkable of all the bards of the "Lost Cause". His war songs of the south were written as he himself said, "not for harm sake, nor for hate sake." Claims it was "the most pathetic dirge inspired by the failure of the South". Contains both the poem and its review.

Also contains review of Bugle Echoes, edited by Francis F. Browne, a collection of poetry in the civil war.

Begun in 1847 by Osgood and Company, the Literary world was the first important American weekly to be devoted chiefly to the discussion of current books. Evert A. Duykinck was editor for the first few months, followed by Charles Fenno Hoffman, who remained for a year and a half. Book reviews were the chief staple, and there were departments of fine arts, drama, music, and "literary intelligence". When the Duyckinck brothers became editors in October, 1848, they introduced greater variety, adding travel sketches, portrayals of manners and amusements in New York, discussions of political and social matters in "The Colonel's Club", a few woodcuts, and some translations. Copious quotations from the more attractive books were included. In 1852 a disastrous fire brought the magazine to an end, but the thirteen volumes published contain much valuable material on the development of American literature from 1847 to 1852.
Editors: Feb.-Apr. 1847, E.A. Duyckinck; May 1847-Sept. 1848, C.F. Hoffman; Oct. 1848-Dec. 1853, E.A. Duyckinck, G.L. Duyckinck.
