Except for the years of World War I when she lived in Calgary, Annie Beatrice Hickson (1873-1943) spent her life in Montreal where she was well known for her charitable work. The Girls Cottage Industrial School for "misdirected and wayward" girls, which she co-founded in 1911 with her sister, author Mary Elizabeth Hickson*, is perhaps her most lasting contribution. The school provided practical courses in domestic areas like cooking and sewing, as well as the usual curriculum for girls age twelve to eighteen. Beatrice published only one volume of poetry, POEMS-1916 (1916), one poem from which, "Onward" was inscribed on the War Memorial at Summerside, Prince Edward Island. Her article on Li Po which appeared in the CANADIAN FORUM received a great deal of praise. As well, she painted figurines which were unique in design and costume and whose popularity outran her ability to produce them.
