This study challegnes the generally accepted notion that the chief merit of modern English war poetry lies in its exposure of the horrors of war. Covering the period 1890-1945, the author traces the emergence of a new kind of war poetry growing out of the changing literary circumstances. He demonstrates that the English poet has not flinched from discovering what is significantly human even in the most nightmarish experience.
