The Late War: Poetry by a Veteran's Son is an emotional journey on the meaning of the Canadian experience of war and the Canadian remembrance of war. Jeffrey Stephaniuk was chosen as the Saskatchewan representative for the 1997 Royal Canadian Legion Pilgrimage of Remembrance to England, France, Belgium, and Holland. The Late War includes photos and poetry inspired by this tour to sites and cemeteries important to Canadians. The book also includes poetry about what it means to the author to be a veteran's son. "I am interested in how veterans look back on the years of their youth, how we today can remember our soldiers with dignity, and what it means to be able to travel freely to places that once were so dangerous to our young Canadians." The Late War: Poetry by a Veteran's Son concludes with an essay about many of the books that are available to students interested in the war years, especially the Second World War.
