Notes
John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir PC GCMG GCVO CH (26 August 1875 – 11 February 1940) was a Scottish novelist, historian and Unionist politician who served as Governor General of Canada, Served in the Army in propoganda department in WW1. Primarily wrote adventure novels and some poetry.

In early 1915 Buchan became one of five journalists attached to the British Army, with responsibility for writing articles for both The Times and the Daily News. Consequently Buchan covered Second Ypres and the Battle of Loos.

With the outbreak of war Buchan was recruited by Charles Masterman, head of the War Propaganda Bureau, to write an ongoing history of the war in magazine form. Nelson's History of the War, in twenty four instalments, began to appear in February 1915.

A major influence on Buchan’s writing was World War I in which his brother Alastair and several of his close friends were killed. These for Remembrance (1919) is a poignant tribute to these men. The first edition is very rare as it was published privately in small numbers and given to the families of these men. However, a public edition was printed in 1987 and is more readily available. As well as this book and his history of the Great War he wrote several other books relating to the conflict such as The History of the South African Forces in France (1920) and Francis and Riversdale Grenfell (1920).
