"Ernest Denny came from Redditch, Worcestershire, where his father was headmaster of the Wesleyan school. He was educated at King Edward VI school, Birmingham and University College, Reading, and trained as a teacher. He was a private in the Artists' Rifles and became a 2nd lieutenant attached to the 17th King's Royal Rifle Corps. He died in France from wounds received in action on 4th August 1917, aged 29 years old." -- t.p. verso
