Notes
"This is an anthology unlike any other ever offered to any reader of any nationality. It is an anthology in praise of England and of all that England has defended and is now defending. It has been made by an American; and it was printed... and published in America, without any thought of publication in England, not for profit but in order that its editor might help his fellow-countrymen to understand the things at stake in the war. Its publication in England is due simply to the fact that one Englishman, to whom a copy of the American editon was sent, felt that it would help Englishmen, no less than Americans, to understand what they are fighting for. The English publishers have to thank the American editor, Mr. Bronson, and the owners of the copyright passages included in the volume, for making the English edition possible. They regret that war-time restrictions prevent them from attempting to reproduce the magnificent and beautiful format of the American edition. They have done their best to present Mr. Bronson's splendid tribute in a volume which, if modest, is not unworthy of its time." -- dust jacket
