born Jan. 11, 1853, Lübeck [Germany]
died Feb. 8, 1916, Grossborstel, near Hamburg

German poet and novelist prominent among the new lyric poets of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His verses were influenced by folk songs and the Romantic poets and celebrated simple domestic pleasures. With the beginning of the First World War proved to be as uncompromising nationalist hawk, his literary work entirely in the service of the German goals presented. Für sein Wirken im Dienst der Kriegspropaganda wurde ihm 1915 der preußische Rote Adlerorden verliehen. For his work in the service of the propaganda war, he was the Prussian 1915 Red Eagle.
