1834. In these literary poems and prose, Pike became New Mexico's first Anglo- American short story writer and poet. The narrative portion of this book is one of the earliest accounts of travels from the Mexican borderlands by an American. His writings are some of the first that give the reader a detailed account of the Southwest and its people at that time from an outsider's point of view. His brilliant and concise impressions were recorded in his poetry and reminiscences.
