First Edition. Over 5-1/2" - 6-¾" tall. Orig. brown cloth w/title in brown on a gilt background, beveled boards, tiny bit of edgeware head & tail. 59pp., chocolate coated endpapers, aeg., beautiful head & tail decorations each poem. Internally clean & tight.


Elbridge Jefferson Cutler work from 1867 ("Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1866, by LITTLE, BROWN, & CO"), this copy also carries in it a wondrous ownership inscription from that year (see photo)! You have your research cut out for you to discover more fully the identity of either Harry or Augustus: "Harry, from his uncle Augustus. January 28th 1867"


CUTLER, Elbridge Jefferson, educator, born in Holliston, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, 28 December 1831 ; died in Cambridge, Massachusetts, 27 December 1870. In 1865 he was appointed professor of modern languages at Itar-yard, a chair which he held at the time of his death. He was a brilliant writer, and an able though generous critic. His published works were "War Poems" (Boston, 1867) and "Stella" (1868). A memoir of Professor Cutler was published by Andrew P. Peabody (Cambridge, 1872).
