Dr. Redmountain was born in Belgrade and left with his family during the Nazi occupation of Yugoslavia in World War II. After four years in Cuba, his family settled in New York. His surname at birth was either Rosenberg or Rosenberger -- it was spelled both ways on his parents' identification papers -- but his father changed it to "Rode" upon arriving in the United States. Dr. Redmountain was known as Alex Rode until the late 1970s, when he changed his name to Redmountain, an English translation of Rosenberg. He served in the Army during the Korean War and was a reporter for Stars and Stripes, a military newspaper.
After receiving a doctorate in psychology from George Washington University in the mid-1970s, he entered private practice. In 1978, he founded Psychologists for Social Responsibility, a national organization that promotes peace and social justice.
