Notes
The Burden Of Engela, a Ballad Epic by A. M. Buckton, (alice mary) published by Methuen and Co. 1904. A series of poetic episodes in the life of a Boer woman on a farm in the Transvaal in South Africa during the Boer War. Curiously the author never visited the country. Hardback with a striking design in gilt on the front and spine. Some wear to the ends, small feint ring mark on cover ( see pic ). Top edge gilt. Pages in good clean condition, binding is firm.

Although not a South African, but rather educated at Haslemere, Alice Mary Buckton's The Burden of Engela (1904) well described the life of a Boer woman on a Transvaal farm during the Anglo-Boer War.
