This is a really important and interesting book entitled OUR GIRLS IN WARTIME with rhymes by Hampden Gordon, pictures by Joyce Dennys ( authors of Our Hospital ABC ) and published by John Lane The Bodley Head. There is no published date but there is an inscription dated from Christmas 1917. (reilly say 1917)Measuring approximately 7.5" x 9.5", this volume contains 25 depictions of all the various trades and professions women found themselves occupied in during - and as a result of - The Great War. On each page there is a little verse about each girl accompanied by the most striking and wonderfully humorous three-colour period illustrations by Joyce Dennys. As a piece of female social history this is invaluable and it is a fitting salute to a generation of women. The book itself has strong tan pictorial boards with obvious signs of rubbing and wear along the edges and the back cover (which also includes a picture) is rather grubby. Inside, although the first endpaper has a split along the spine, the threads are strong and intact and the binding remains tight. Each of the 26 glorious pages are clean and clear.
