b. 1912. Educated at Stonyhurst College, and Christ Church, Oxford. Critic and reporter for The Manchester guardian, 1937-39. attached to B.B.C. German Service, 1939-42. Served in Special Forces and No. 10 Commando, 1942-45. A Captain, mentioned in dispatches. Administrator with the B.B.C. after the war. Appointed Director of the Royal Ballet School in 1977
