Frontispiece commissioned as Lieutenant in the 104th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, later transferrd to the 140th. From England he was sent with the 52nd Battalion to France in Feb 1917, they being decimated at Paschendale. He was wounded at Vimy Ridge, invalided back to England for 3 months. He rejoined the 52nd at lens. On Aug 27th 1917, he was badly injured and lost his left hand, eventually returning home to Canada via England. He died of malaria in Venezuela aged 27 whilst working in oil. His brother, F C Manning of the 85th, was killed at Vimy Ridge.
