Notes
Illustrated by Elizabeth D. Logan and published in 1943 by the Professional Printing Company, Inc., New York, this scarce 116-page hard cover book, "NURSES VERSES", is a compilation of poetry by American nurses, selected from "Songs of the Nightingale", First and Second Series, published by Harbinger House, New York City. While many of the poems are not strictly related to medicine, the 5-1/2" x 8" book has such rhymes as "Thoughts on a Course in Medicine", by Mona Cutler Hull, and "Ode to a Flaxseed Poultice" by Lucy C. Matthew: "It felt so good but smelled so foul- That hasty pudding in a towel. Though not a thing of pure delight When first it burst upon my sight, It rested better on my tum Than cakes and ale or frosted bun." Some poems are humorous like this one, some are sad, and some are beautiful.
