Michael Umphrey was awarded a Bertha Morton Fellowship and the Richard Hugo Memorial Scholarship at the University of Montana in 1987. He was recognized as an "Outstanding Teacher from Montana" by the governor in 1986. His first collection of poetry, Lit Window, was published by Cleveland State University Poetry Center in 1987.
