Captain Robert Cecil Gordon Canning, a captain in the Royal Hussars during World War I, was the great grandson of the Poet Lord Byron. In 1934 Canning joined the British Union of Fascists, became a close associate of Mosley and met senior Nazi officials. In 1938 he broke with Mosley on personal grounds, becoming the treasurer of the anti-war group, the British Council for Christian Settlement.
