"Joe Anderson Cunningham, The Preaching Drummer" -- t.p.

Born and raised in Jackson Tennessee, followed brother P.D. Cunningham into service, went into the Twenty-eighth Tennessee Confederate Infantry in 1861, became assistant commissary and general clerk at headquarters, brother killed in the battle of Murfreesboro, Joe Cunningham was released from army, became scout for Colonel Hamilton, later given authority to equip a company of cavalry behind Federal lines. Captured in fall of 1863, sent to Fort Delaware until war ended. After war, met and married Jennie Jones, who died 23 years later. -- adapted from "Autobiographical Sketch" pp.3-9.
