Notes
Chavée, Achille (1906-69). Chavée could simply be presented as one of the leading members of the Belgian Surrealist group, but that would not do full justice to this self-styled prophet in his own country (see his 1957 poem beginning ‘Minuit le temps d'une seconde’). In the 1930s he founded the ‘Rupture’ group in La Louvière before going to Spain to fight in the International Brigades. He was a believer in the Absolute, his poems tend to be cryptic, and his imagination oscillates between the childlike and the adult. His numerous collections of poems include Une foi pour toutes (1938), D'ombre et de sang (1946), and De vie et mort naturelles (1965).
