Scaife, Christopher Henry Oldham (b.1900). In the First World War tried unsuccessfully to join the Army at the age of fourteen. Educated at St. john's College, Oxford. President of the Oxford Union, Newdigate Prizewinner in 1923. Lived in Egypt pre-war, working in the English Department at Cairo University. In 1940 volunteered for active service with the Libyan/Arab Force. Evacuated from Tobruk as a casualty in June 1941. Became a Major on the military establishment of the Ministry of Information, Middle East. In 1945 appointed Advisor to the Ministry of Education, Iraq. Later Professor of English at the American University of Beirut. Retired to Arezzo, Italy. -- Reilly 291.
