Notes
Translated from Polish. This comprehensive volume includes work from virtually every major Polish poet active during the past twenty years, drawing from both 'official' and underground sources.

From Library Journal
According to Baranczak, an emigre poet who teaches at Harvard, the sociopolitical events of 1970-1989 "contributed to one of the most crucial experiences in the history of the Polish nation." Spurred by these momentous historical changes, the 29 poets represented in this anthology brought about the remarkable growth of lyric poetry in Poland over the last two decades. A few will be familiar to American readers: Czeslaw Milosz, Zbigniew Herbert, and Adam Zagajewski have international reputations, but the others are less well known outside Poland. Women poets are also represented, including Wislawa Szymborska, one of her country's most popular writers. The selection of work by poets who came to maturity during the 1970s and 1980s brings an immediate sense of living and writing in an epoch-making time. Showing how "Polish poetry of the last two decades offered an astonishingly wide array of individual human responses to the faceless inhumanity of state oppression and a hopeless future," this is an important addition to literature and poetry collections.
