Published by The Hobson Book Press, New York, 1945. First edition, hardcover in original dustjacket, 104 pages, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR on the first free endpaper. Illustrated with b&w drawings, 3 of which are of varieties of cactus. A collection of verse telling the story of the American GIs who trained in Texas for the battles of World War Two, and describing the history of the state and the beauty of the land.

From the jacket flap: "The repetitive cycle of old and new symbolizes this verse story of the GI's introduction tot he Lone Star State. The lusty, embattled history of Texas made a fitting background for the gigantic effort of training men of all races and creeds to blend their efforts for victory...And over the echo of ancient strife and courage is heard the roar of planes and rattle of tanks as once again Texas is called to arms".

Some titles: El Paso, St. Helena, Pecos River, Devil's River, San Felipe Springs, Galveston, Matamoros, Battle of San Jacinto, Texas Forts, Remember the Alamo, San Antonio, San Fernando, Austin's Early Years, Colorado River, the Brazos, the Country Teacher, the Country Church, Fort Worth, Airplanes, Cattle Trails, Stampede, Pioneering, Emancipation, Dallas, Cotton Picking, and more.

Bound in blue cloth, boards measuring 5.75 by 8.5 inches; the oft-missing jacket, which has heavy wear with several large chips, several one-inch edge tears which have been taped on the reverse; several other half-inch and smaller edge tears, a long 5-inch tear to back cover, some fading to cover and spine; corners trimmed but price still present. The book itself has minor bumping at extremities, light fading at top and bottom edges; the front free endpaper has author's signature in the lower corner, with a previous owner's gift inscription in ink to the rest of the page, otherwise clean throughout. Condition is Good.
