The author joined the regular Army in 1966, served in Vietnam with 1 ARU 3PI and 7th Batallion RAR, June to November 1967. He was wounded in action on the first day of 'Operation Forest'. The rest of his military history is also related in the intro.

The book contains 92 poems and 'statements' about his experiences in Vietnam, as well a photocopies of newspaper clippings, cartoons and letters, some from Vietnamese, and a Glossary of military and other terms ('Definitions') which are a useful guide to the language of the time.
