Notes
Boer War and other Poems: "Battlefield Fragments and Other Poems" by "An Old Trooper" [C.H.Capern]. This first edition published in 1913 by Templar Press. Lovely signed inscription from the author to the free front end-paper. "To his darling child Ilfra with every blessing & untold love from her dear old dad - C.H.Capern, The Author. Birmingham, July 11. 1913". Bound in blind-stamped red cloth, titles in gilt to front cover and spine. There are 95-pages of text that include many poems relating to his personal experiences in the Boer War, and others, many being written during his stay in Kimberley Hospital. Included is an inserted type-written poem which i am told the author had dedicated to his wife after her death. This reads - "Sleep on my love in thy cold bed, Never to be disquieted; My last farewell; Thou wilt not wake Till i thy fate will overtake; Till age or grief or sickness must Marry my body to that dust It so much loves; and fill the room My heart keeps empty in thy tomb. Stay for me there; I will not fail To meet thee in that hollow vale, And think not much of my delay I am already on the way. Each minute is a short degree And every hour a step towards thee". There is slight rubbing to the spine otherwise the covers are quite good. Endpapers are discoloured with just a little odd spot of sporadic foxing. Only one other copy found available for sale after a trawl of the internet. A very scarce copy to include the dedicated, signed inscription, together with the type-written poem.
