edition of the first translation of Pilote de Guerre, originally published the same year in New York, as was the original French-language edition (all three preceding the expurgated first Paris edition issued 27 November 1942). It describes the author's experience as a French pilot during the catastrophic defeat of May 1940, and appears here two year before he returned to combat flying (in which he was killed). His classic children's book Le Petit Prince was first published in New York the year following our title (by the American publisher of Flight to Arras, Reynal & Hitchcock).
